What We Remember
What We Remember is a multicultural coming-of-age narrative inspired by the personal experiences of Adán J. Ruiz and Doy Charnsupharindr. The play is semi-autobiographical and follows Adán, who hails from Mexico, and Doy, who is from Thailand, as they navigate and explore the world around them.
As the story unfolds, Adán and Doy encounter both hardships and profound joys. Despite their different cultural backgrounds, they discover that their souls are brothers, highlighting a shared humanity. The play delves into themes of identity, language, and memory, showcasing the intersectionality found in everyone.
Set in a metaphorical “vault of memories,” the play opens with a traditional Thai puppet show. It then explores the layered memories of Adán and Doy, including childhood rituals like Día de los Muertos and Wan Wai Jao, family meals, and intergenerational wisdom, juxtaposed with moments of fear, loss, and joy.

Themes
The narrative touches on themes of immigration, cultural inheritance, intergenerational connection, identity, and transformation. The play is multi-lingual, seamlessly incorporating English, Spanish, and Thai. It also integrates the traditional Thai art of shadow puppetry, as well as multimedia and music.
Fuse Theatre has committed to presenting Adán and Doy’s stories in unedited formats, recognizing the importance and uniqueness of their experiences, which are not commonly seen in theatre. The play aims to introduce audiences to new cultures, languages, and stories with universal themes that will allow them to connect with the characters. Ultimately, What We Remember emphasizes the idea that despite different backgrounds, there is a quiet, shared humanity that invites audiences to see themselves in the stories being told.
